Mark Roberts has more than 30 years of sales, business and corporate development, and financial experience in the energy and mining industries.
Mark worked at two large utility companies, two large mining companies and had his own consulting practices. He started his career at a predecessor to MidAmerican Energy Company, a Berkshire Hathaway company. Leadership experiences at MidAmerican included such diverse areas as accounting, rate cases, regulatory filings, energy trading, coal procurement & logistics, strategic planning and environmental. The company also went through many changes during Mark’s career there with three mergers in the 1990s. Mark had lead roles in merger integration. After leaving MidAmerican, Mark did enterprise risk management and strategic & resource planning consulting work for utilities.
After this utility-oriented career, Mark joined three companies where he focused on either selling or buying coal. At Rio Tinto, he focused on sales and business development for five Western US coal mines and started an export business for Rio Tinto. At Rio, Mark also worked on asset optimization effort (e.g., debt refinancing) and divested an IT subsidiary that sold artificial-intelligence software for coal-fired generating plants. After Rio exited US coal markets, he joined Xcel Energy, buying over 20m short tons of coal per year for the utility. Mark then joined Kiewit, a large construction, and engineering company with a smaller mining unit. At Kiewit, he focused not only on international and domestic coal sales but also business development for contract mining.
Mark has a BS degree in Industrial Administration (accounting) from Iowa State University and an MBA from Drake University.
Mark’s primary activities involve family, reading and running. He has run in over 100 competitive races (although not competitively), including two 52k runs (same race twice).
